CHAPTERS ABOUT MY HAIR, UNTOLD STORIES
This series of paintings tells the story of my relationship with my hair a reflection of how I felt about myself. For a long time, it was not a healthy reflection of love. Growing up in a world shaped by Eurocentric beauty standards, where Black hair was often seen as something to "fix" or "tame," I internalized the idea that my hair, and by extension I, was somehow not enough.
Now, years later, I can say that reflection has changed. It has grown into patience, compassion, and love. Each painting captures a moment: different hairstyles, rituals of care, moments of frustration, moments of joy. Through my hair, I tell a larger story one of reclaiming beauty, confronting cultural narratives, and finding pride in what was once seen as other.
